We headed up to the big pond (Lake Erie) for my first ever walleye tournament weigh-in, the Lake Erie Walleye Trail Championship. Being that it was a blustery 30 degree day, I was shocked to see the amount of boats out on the lake! Its was also the second last day of the Fall Brawl, and we saw many many anglers headed out in snowy conditions for one last chance at the BIG ONE. Needless to say, Gordon Park was JANNED FULL of trailers parked in the grass and everywhere there was a space.
The LEWT Championship was supposed to be a two day event. Friday was a blown out, and today looked to be small craft advisory as well, so it ended up being a one day championship. These anglers had some tough conditions, but came to the scales with some heavy bags of walleye! There were quite a few over 9 lbs. competing for big fish. 9.56 won, I believe. Rumor has it that LEWT winner Chase Cominsky is the guy who is leading the Fall Brawl, too! Congrats to he and his partner Jake Runyon on their win. Congratulations also to Lake Erie Walleye Trail on an awesome 2021 season! Jason and his crew do an awesome job with sponsorship and directing this tournament trail.
Wow, is Gordon Park easy to get to! Quite literally, right of Rt. 2 (the East Shoreway) just east of downtown Cleveland. There is a 5-lane boat ramp with easy, close access to Lake Erie. There is plenty of shoreline to fish with picnic tables, flush toilet bathrooms and a fish cleaning station. We actually threw a few casts along the shore for bass, but no luck. We will definitely make this one of our stops for bass fishing next year, however!
